Slow toast — pic by author

It is the Monday morning just after a weekend away. And before the week started, I was sitting reading stories here on Medium, and also catching up on some things in my inbox.

One of which was from Michael and Justine’s Patreon — notifying me of a new Behind the Scenes video they had posted for their supporters — who I proudly am.

And after watching it — I reached out and wrote this to them:

“ …. Just wanted to share with you an update re our new little spot in the country which I mentioned a month or so ago in the comments to one of your behind the scenes I think.

We visited the place for the first time this weekend.

It was empty and worn from being a home for 57 years to a man who grew up there, and was now leaving to follow his dream in a new continent.

We spent the weekend cleaning away the cobwebs and soaking into the place.

We had lived up in the Kamberg mountains in the Drakensburg (South Africa) so many years ago as 20 something young-uns, and this felt like we were back. We had run a very early pick your own veggie garden there — sadly on a very racist farmer’s land. Where cabbages we grew were told to be fed to the cows rather than to the hungry wives and children who lived around (we ignored this of course and left lines of them by the fence every week)
